For a wonderful, exciting place to go on holiday in Europe, it would be hard to do much better than Portugal.

Located in the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal might be next door to Spain but the country is actually very different, making it a great place to explore.

There is a fantastic range of things to do within Portugal, as well as many great choices when it comes to accommodation.

Geography and Climate

The geography of the country is really varied, which makes it great for people who are looking to explore.

For instance, in the south of the country you’ll find beautiful beach destinations such as the Algarve. Then, slightly further north you will find areas such as the Alentejo region where the ground is almost like a desert.

The centre of the country is largely populated by rocky mountains, while the north features lots of green mountains covered in trees and vines.

In terms of the weather, Portugal is a pretty warm country, during the hot summer months: July and August, temperatures can get up to 40 degrees or more.

However, it isn’t uncommon for the mountains in the north of the country to experience snow in the cooler winter months. There is also some variation between different parts of the country, which is something to bear in mind if you’re planning a trip.

The Azores for instance are much rainier than Madeira, which experiences very low levels of rain in general. As one of the warmest European countries, though, Portugal is great place to visit in all seasons.

Something for Everyone

There is a lot to do in Portugal no matter where you stay, so if you do decide to visit then you certainly won’t be bored.

The capital city of Lisbon is vibrant and exciting, and has some great nightlife. If you prefer a typical beach holiday then head for the Algarve which is well-known for its beaches.

The islands of the Azores and Madeira are also great for natural wildlife and scenery, and Portugal is also known for its impressive selection of golf courses.

Overall, there is so much to see and do in this exciting country that you’re sure to want to go back again and again.
