The Alentejo region of Portugal has only recently become a popular tourist destination for those from outside Portugal. As such, it retains a truly unspoiled feel. The Alentejo offers a surprising choice of destinations. There are busy coastal resorts such as Vila Nova de Milfontes, walled towns such as the stunning Evora, and working cities such as Beja.
The Alentejo region covers a surprisingly large geographical area, and between the towns the area can feel endearingly desolate. Large rolling hills are covered in flowers at certain times of year, and temperatures can be extreme: both freezing cold in winter and roasting hot in summer.
Those who want to discover the real Portugal will find it here. Glorious days can be spent exploring vineyards, and dining in tiny local restaurants where the food is fresh and the prices are low. It’s worth considering carrying a phrasebook to make the most of this region.
